We have been official Michiganders for almost 5 months.
I have somehow survived without having a car. We got a new puppy! I did not, in fact, kill my children and said puppy during Josh's "Month-O-Finals". I miss my family, a lot. I miss the beach, a lot. I miss daily dialogue with people over the age of five...A LOT!
But...I love it here! I love that it is just us and that we are forging our way. I love the strengthening that comes through and after the trials. I love seeing the moments that make it seem like our parenting is paying off. I love seeing Josh absorb this experience at dental school.
Love it!

Settled
Well, we have officially been home-renters for almost a month. Hotel hoppin' is cool and all, but it sure is nice to have your own bed...and address!
We are in a really nice little suburb with great schools and, from what we've heard, even greater trick-or-treating hot spots! SCORE!
It's starting to get a little chilly for our liking, San Diego is in our bones.
J is killing dental school, and the boys and I are killing the community park scene!
I will post some pics of our house soon.
Peace!

If ever there were a blog update...
I'm currently sitting in a Super 8 in Lincoln Park, Michigan..
The AC is blasting a cool 64 degrees, and for the most part, is muffling the noise of the oncoming trains that pass by the hotel every 20 minutes. There is a Lean Cuisine frozen dinner to my side and Axton is watching his second hour of Nick Jr. Sprout. Anchor is napping. We will most-likely venture out of the room after lunch to swim in pool. This is bliss.
Pure and utter bliss compared to the NIGHTMARE of last week!
Last month, we sold almost all of our stuff and packed what was left into a U-Haul. 40 hours of cross-country-car-trippin' and20 a couple McDonald stops later...we made it to our house in Licoln Park. Without going into too much detail, the house was a mess and not livable for our kiddos. The previous tenant moved out hours before we got there, so the house had not been cleaned or inspected. Let's just say that we were afraid to let the boys walk around.
And, there we were. Stir-crazy children. Josh was starting school the next day. We had no food, and the kitchen was not sanitary to keep any groceries. The house wasn't safe for the kids to explore. We had to return our U-Haul truck. So, we did what anyone in our situation would do...
...we got in our car and drove to McDonald's to regroup.
The past two weeks have been stressful and trying (and expensive!) to say the least, but we found an awesome house and are set to move in next week! Not to brag or anything, but we have awesome family who have done so much for us during this whole ordeal. We would be in an awful predicament had it not been for them...or our smart phones!
On the plus side, we REALLY do like Michigan thus far, and Josh is at an amazing school! And...the kids are now fully-acclimated to sitting in the car for LONG periods of time! This is going to be a great experience and I can't wait to share it with everyone via this blog!
Now, if you don't mind, I am off to enjoy my Lean Cuisine, which, if I may be so bold, is WAY better than McDonald's!
Welcome to Michigan!

Tangled Web Woven
A friend of mine said something kind of genius...
"Christmas cards take too much effort. Trying to fit all that 'pretend perfect' into a letter once a year is impossible! Blogs are way easier because you have the whole year to try to fool people. You can spread the B.S out a little bit more!"
Touché.
I think family pictures are pretty symbolic of this point also, at least when it comes to our little fam. I don't know about your family pictures, but we normally take somewhere between 10 and 2,395 pictures in order to get ONE good shot where everyone is smiling and looking adorable...all the rest are the real moments when someone has either spit up or picked their nose...or chose what seemed like a cute outfit that would surely hide any love handles but, in fact, did the opposite ...cough, cough. Those should probably be the ones that make it into picture frames because that is who we really are!
Another friend of mine said, "I hate blogs. People are either lying about their life being so perfect or they are funny about their life when it sucks." (I'm paraphrasing there.)
This got me to thinking about these:
Another friend of mine said, "I hate blogs. People are either lying about their life being so perfect or they are funny about their life when it sucks." (I'm paraphrasing there.)
This got me to thinking about these:
These are just a handful of pictures on our computer of me. They are the ones that are hard for me to look at for one reason or another. Pregnancy weight gain. A huge spider bite in between my eyes. What I look like when I wake up. No make-up on and out of shape. There are a lot more pictures (tons) that make me sad. Everyone has them. You should know that this is terrifying for me to give others access to.
But you should also know this...
As I was going through pictures trying to genuinely find the notorious ones that usually make me cringe, something happened. Because the point of this was to find the "bad" pictures, I actually started noticing that there were a lot of good ones. Pictures that reflected great times in my life, fun adventures, and wonderful moments with my children. The embarrassing ones didn't seem as tragic to me, and I actually found myself thinking, "Ok, I don't look THAT horrible. I could deal with other people seeing me at what I consider to be some of my worst photographic moments."
Then I thought outside of the realm of pictures. I can be more comfortable with sharing the imperfect parts of my life too. I can be ok with my struggles and weaknesses. I don't have to try to hide who I really am, and I certainly don't need to be ashamed of the "bad" moments. I can do away with the phony Christmas-card mentality.
So that's where I'm at right now. We'll see how brave I can really be, because I'm not too sure how willing I will be to share
*Staying true to what I just said about being more honest and blah blah blah, you should know that I am neglecting my screaming baby and have just yelled at my other child to be quiet so I could think and finish this post, and make all of you think that I am awesome.*
Progress.

"You Play Like a Girl"...YUP.
Buckle up, friends. This post is about to get long...and real. With strong opinions and likely grammatical errors and run-on sentences (did you see what I did there, English majors?). Little to no pictures of my cute children.
Still with me?
Awesome. Sometime last year, I wrote about a seemingly-small, and to many, insignificant incident that I experienced at the local YMCA. You can read about it here. I approached it with a sort of tone that might have implied it was just a silly and whimsical situation, but in all actuality, it has been a real thorn in my side.
In summary, my husband and I played basketball at a gym in which I was the only female player. My presence was not well received, and I was openly subjected to sexist remarks and attitudes, despite (or maybe I should say "in spite of") my equal, if not superior, basketball skills. After this experience, we haven't gone back to play...until a few weeks ago.
I really love playing basketball. It seriously is the one thing that I can honestly admit to being good at and is something I love about myself. I know the game inside out, and I love it just the same. If I would've made different decisions in my younger life, I know without a doubt that I could've done really great things with my career in basketball. My parents invested countless hours and thousands of dollars in my potential, and I put in the work. Basketball is not only a huge part of my life, but is also now a treasured activity that I get to share with my husband, and it has bonded us more than I can express. Though it may sound trite, playing makes me happy and I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't play anymore.
Why am I telling you this?
Last week, my husband and I went back to play again. The first few days were great. There was a younger group of men that were not even phased by my presence. It was normal. Then, on the third day, some familiar faces turned up...
"No, no, no! These teams aren't fair. We gotta switch things up. We got the chick on our team?"
"What's the matter, you sitting out because we're being too mean to you, sweetie?"
"Ok, it's me, Mark, Chris...what's your name, bro? Ok, Josh... and the girl."
"Dave, Dave! Just keep working her on the screens, chick doesn't know what she's doing. Easy shot. She doesn't know what she's doing."
How mild are these comments in comparison to the monstrosities others face based on their gender, race, religion, sexual-orientation, etc.?! It's still hurtful and maddening, however. Like I mentioned earlier, basketball means a lot to me, and to have someone act like I am inferior and don't deserve to be involved based on my gender is NOT OK. I admittedly cowered to this pathetic demonstration, and offered to sit out if my presence was going to cause any problems. My first and last mistake. I am not going to be pushed around by some egocentric, uneducated, chauvinistic jerk who has nothing better to do than search for my weaknesses instead of addressing his own. On a more positive note, I guess more than the disdain for this perpetuated attitude, my heart is full of gratitude for the famed and unheralded alike, who have battled the sting of discrimination and endured for change. I want to be that caliber of a person.
In conclusion, "You play like a girl" is a compliment, and I won't let anyone insinuate differently. Look out, haters.

The Slight Shift of Slumber
Tonight we got home pretty late after Josh's basketball game. I wanted to just put the kids to bed so I could go to bed myself. This day had been a trying one...an emotional one. I tried for twenty minutes with no avail to get both kids calmed down, and after denying Axton's tearful and very adamant pleas for me to lay down with him, I left the room frustrated, only to hear Anchor begin to cry louder. Eleven o'clock. My kids were wide awake and cranky. Perfect.
After a few minutes of hearing their lasting cries, I stopped paying attention. But not too long after that, I noticed that both kids had suddenly stopped crying. I went to check on them.
As I peeked into the room, I saw Axton cradling his baby brother in his arms and carrying him over to his bed. He had successfully picked Anchor up and gotten him out of the crib somehow. I could hear him whispering, "It's ok little brother, it's ok. Axton's here. It's ok sweet baby." He brought Anchor into the bed with him and put the blankets over them, continuing to whisper over the baby's soft whimpers, "It's ok, it's ok". Once under the blankets, I saw Anchor instinctively curl into Axton, and his soft whimpers immediately turned into a dull, rolling snore. All the while, Axton's hand gently patted Anchor's back in a sweet and uneven rhythm: "It's ok. It's ok. Axton's here."
And I watched as my children fell asleep together.

A Reason, A Season, A Lifetime
I read this many years ago and it has been weighing heavily on my mind today. I wanted to share:
People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.
When you figure out which one it is,
you will know what to do for each person.
When someone is in your life for a REASON,
it is usually to meet a need you have expressed.
They have come to assist you through a difficulty;
to provide you with guidance and support;
to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually.
They may seem like a godsend, and they are.
They are there for the reason you need them to be.
Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time,
this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end.
Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.
Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.
What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled; their work is done.
The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.
Some people come into your life for a SEASON,
because your turn has come to share, grow or learn.
They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh.
They may teach you something you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.
Believe it. It is real. But only for a season.
LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons;
things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation.
Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person,
and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life.
It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

Picture Day!
My all-too-talented-sister-in-law (holy hyphens!), Julie, took our family pictures! I'm pretty darn sure she had to go through a lot of images just to get these precious few...I love 'um because these boys make me look good! Thank you, Julie, you rock my socks! (Note: I have omitted an otherwise fantastic picture of us all walking off into the sunset. Let's just say that my skinny jeans did not serve their purpose, thus catalyzing my New Year's resolution to work- the freak- out!)

Merry and Bright
For those of you probably thrown by the pathetic and disgustingly-egocentric mess that was my last post...have no fear, I am over myself!
I am not, however, over my stupendous husband who happened to be accepted to dental school this month! WOOT WOOT! (It's not egocentric if I'm talking about my spouse, right?!) At this moment, we are decidedly leaving La Jolla for Detroit in the fall.
Holy friggin' juxtaposition, Batman!
It's fantastic though, and we are thrilled! He has another interview coming up and several schools still reviewing his application, so our destination could still change.
On a different note, Christmas was extra special this year as I had the stomach flu leading up 'til the big event.
-6 pounds from flu + 6 pounds from holiday binging = the first year with no Christmas weight gain!
All kinds of new and exciting things in 2012 for the Lange Family!
Hope your holidays are wonderful!

Fix You
I have a lot of pretty heavy things on my mind right now, and I really just want to write, to just put everything down and be free of it. But I am frozen with anxiety thinking about a false audience, and the perceptions that people might have of me. How lame! Seriously, there are only like seven people that even read this blog, and I would assume that most people would immediately leave as soon as they realized there weren't any pictures!
I'm tired of censoring and editing my life, or sugar-coating my posts to really cover-up the main issue which is this: life is hard and I am having a hard time figuring things out. But this is ok, this is part of the journey.
So, for the record, I'm officially calling bull-crap on myself right now (you'll notice my lack of censoring just then...I'm on my way!). And to end on a more creative note, I will leave you with the words of Coldplay:
When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse
And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I...
Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I...
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse
And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you
Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I...
Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I...
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Free at Last!
The little ones and I spent this past week visiting our favorite Arizonians. It was like an early Christmas, despite the projectile vomiting and foregoing of daily naps. We survived the 6-hour car ride on rations of Chex Mix and Big Gulps. And of course, the only stations the radio seemed to pick up were playing non-stop Christmas music...seriously, how many versions of "The Little Drummer Boy" are there?
The best part of this week though (besides discovering Bahama Bucks and Cafe Rio)? I deleted my Facebook account.
Feel free to pin a golden star on my big girl shirt anytime.
This has kinda been a long-time coming. I've been going back and forth, but whenever I had my mouse hovering over the "Deactivate Account" button, this stupid little thing would pop up:
Pavlov's Dogs anyone?
I don't know what it is about virtual acknowledgment? I mean, I know my kids are adorable and that the photo I took of myself in the mirror looks AMAZING (because I purposefully cropped out my double-chin and frizzy hair), but somehow it's more validating when you know 24 people from your old high school pushed the thumbs-up icon.
I think I would end up developing an eating disorder if I stayed on Facebook too much longer. Not kidding. There is nothing that takes a punch to your self-esteem more than seeing one of your husband's ex-girlfriends posting a picture of herself running a friggin' marathon, while you're sitting on the couch...stalking Facebook...wishing you could run a marathon...and eating Oreo's. (I guess if this was the case, my eating disorder of choice would be binge-eating and purging...without the purging.)
Don't even get me started on status updates..."So proud of my three-year-old! He just learned how to ride a bike, count to 100, and speak Elvish...all in one day!"
My three-year-old still refers to himself in the third person and thinks chickens say, "Grrrrrr".
While I will indeed miss being able to see pictures of a friend's new baby, or an old co-worker's wedding day, or even things like Gagnam Style... I won't miss the compulsion. The compulsion to compare my worst to someone else's best. The compulsion to harshly judge my own life to the increasingly-falsified world of social media. The compulsion to live for the validity of a little red notification icon.
Deactivated!

Axtonisms Part II
Me: Hey Axton...it's time to clean up your room because it's really dirty.
Axton: It's not really dirty, it's awesome!
Me: Axton, can you go get me a towel, Anchor just spit up all over me.
Axton: Ok!
Me: Hey, do you know where Anchor's pacifier is?
Axton: I'm thinking....it's on the bed, I think. I'm thinking it's on the bed.
Axton: Mommy, it's your birthday? You want some cake? Happy Birthday, Mommy!
Me: Ya, it's my birthday, thank you! Can you sing me the birthday song?
Axton: Sighs in annoyance, "No, Mommy...I'm too big!"
Axton: Mommy, I want some milk.
Me: Can you ask like a big boy?
Axton: Mommy, I want some milk RIGHT NOW. Please!
Axton: It's not really dirty, it's awesome!
Me: Axton, can you go get me a towel, Anchor just spit up all over me.
Axton: Ok!
...Later that day after I've contracted food poisoning and am throwing up in the toilet...
Axton: Mommy, you need a towel? Did you spit up all over?Me: Hey, do you know where Anchor's pacifier is?
Axton: I'm thinking....it's on the bed, I think. I'm thinking it's on the bed.
Axton: Mommy, it's your birthday? You want some cake? Happy Birthday, Mommy!

The Good Word...
Axton: Mommy, look! I'm Jesus! *Twirls around in Josh's over sized shirt*
Me: Wow, that's so cool!
Axton: I'm Jesus and I'm alive!
Me: Ya! Jesus lives! Good job, buddy. *Gives into proud parental moment*
Axton: I'm Jesus and I'm alive and...I'm HUNGRY!
Me: Ya, I guess resurrection is tough business!

Nature's Call
Today I had what will probably go down in my book as being one of the worst beach experiences of my life. It started out pretty joyous. I was sitting in the sand holding Anchor while Axton was frolicking in the waves. The weather was perfect and the summer beach crowd has pretty much gone. He could play in the water all day, and I could totally oblige.
Well, my little moment in La La Land was pretty much smashed to bits.
My three-year-old walked out of the water, looked at me with big eyes, pulled down his pants, and started to poop. I was pretty far away, so there was no way to salvage the situation. "It" didn't end up on the ground but in his shorts, so the whole act of pulling his pants down was basically a failed effort and only served to alert everyone on the beach of what was going on. This is my three-year-old who really looks like he is five, screaming, "Mommy! My bum! My bum hurts! The poop! Ouchie!" That was probably the crowning moment of glory.
Oh, it gets better, friends.
I have a Moby wrap for Anchor. I bring it everywhere. It's like an instant 3-hour nap for the kid and I can man-handle Axton as needed, making adventures like today do-able. Well, I forgot to bring it today. I also left the diaper bag (with wipes) in the car. The closest bathroom was like a mile away.
Picture this if you will:
"Axton, we have to walk to the bathroo.....NOOOOO! Keep your pants on, Axton! DO NOT TOUCH YOUR POOP! You have to keep your pants on so we can go clean you up in the bathroo....AXTON, DON'T TOUCH YOUR BUM!"...all in harsh whispered tones as we walked waddled to the bathroom. I'm pretty sure we were the main attraction to the huge group of teenagers next to us. He was crying like a banshee at this point.
Then we got to the bathroom. The disgusting, unsanitary, revolting beach bathroom. I am holding a baby and obviously can't put him down anywhere. I'm pretty sure we're standing in urine. There's hardly any toilet paper. People keep trying to open the door because the lock is broken. Axton is screaming. Let's just say, I really have no idea how we came out of there alive...and without some kind of disease.
Case and point: Poop Happens!

Summer Lovin'
Our summer actually started towards the end of August, right after Josh took the DAT. He basically spent 2 months studying almost everyday for about 10-12 hours...and the payoff was totally worth it because he did stellar! He was also selected to participate in an externship at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry through his Pre-Dental Society at UCSD. It was a great experience for him, and let's just say that Detroit is up there on our list! He's a stud!
This kid is just adorable...3 months old!
Josh took the boys to the zoo...
Yes, that is my child fully submerged in the Balboa Park fountain.
So sad J is starting school next week, it's been a blast having him here with us!
